The first block of a blockchain is called the genesis block.
On Jan. 3, 2009, the network officially launched when Nakamoto mined block 0 or the Genesis Block, bringing the Bitcoin blockchain into life.
- Bitcoin’s Genesis Block contains a hidden message within it: ”The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of the second bailout for banks.”
- The Genesis block was created with 50 coins in it, which are unspendable. Nobody knows for sure whether this was done intentionally or was an oversight.
- Over the years, many fans have also sent funds to the genesis address, and at the time of publication, there is a total balance of more than 67 BTC there.
- The Bitcoin genesis block also took 6 days to mine, which is strange considering since then each new block takes approximately 10 minutes to mine.
