Public Key

The public key in the blockchain is a large numerical value that is used to encrypt data for a particular recipient.

How does it work? Public keys can be freely shared, allowing users an easy and convenient method for encrypting content and verifying digital signatures.

Can the public key be decrypted? A message encrypted with a recipient’s public key can only be decrypted by the recipient’s private key. This is used in order to ensure confidentiality.

Interesting facts

  • RSA and Diffie-Hellman are the first efficient algorithms in public key cryptography.
  • To emphasize, there are approx. 2^256 public keys possible.
